Who We Are > The Co-op Way

Cooperatives are special because they are
owned by the consumers they serve and because they
are guided by a set of seven principles that reflect the best
interests of those consumers. Today, more
than 930 electric cooperatives service 37 million people in
47 states, representing 12 percent of the
nation's population.
In the interest of those they serve,
all cooperatives adhere to these seven guiding principles:
- Voluntary and Open Membership
- Democratic Member Control
- Members' Economic Participation
- Autonomy and Independence
- Education,Training, and Information
- Cooperation Among Cooperatives
- Concern for Community
