SITES TO SEE IN HARRIS COUNTY

San Jacinto Monument and Museum
Where it is: 3800 Park Road, San Jacinto Battleground Historical State Park on the Houston Ship Channel 22 miles southeast of Houston in Harris County. Open daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m, Museum is free. Nominal admission fee charged for observation floor and Texas Forever: The Battle of San Jacinto.

Historical stats: Between 1936 and 1939, the octagonal monument was constructed for $1.5 million to commemorate the heros of the battle of San Jacinto and all other persons who helped win the independence of Texas.

Monument Size: 570 feet tall topped by a 34-foot star

Symbolization: "Lone Star" of Texas
Experience the history of Texas and the Spanish Southwest! Come see the collected and preserved historical material for research and educational purposes. The museum and monument promotes friendship and sympathetic understanding between the peoples of Texas and those of Mexico, Spain, France, and the Latin-American republics. Museum collections include material relating to Pre-Columbian America, New Spain, Mexico, the Spanish Southwest, and early Texas, largely acquired through unrestricted gifts. In 1996, the collection contained more than 100,000 objects, 50,000 documents, 10,000 images, and a 35,000-volume rare-book library. The innovative multi-image show Texas Forever!! The Battle of San Jacinto is shown in the Jesse H. Jones Theatre for Texas Studies, opened in 1990. Permanent exhibits in the museum outline the history of the region in a continuous chronological line.

Moody Gardens
Located in Galveston, visitors can explore the world's oceans from the inside at the Aquarium Pyramid. You can also visit the Rainforest Pyramid, explore life in space at the Discovery Museum and take an adventure ride on the IMAX Ridefilm Theater. Space Center Houston
Journey into America’s space program! Provided by NASA’s Official Visitors Center, Space Center Houston features actual spacecraft, live astronauts training for upcoming shuttle missions and even a walk in space through state-of-the-art simulators. The Center also houses Texas’ largest IMAX theater, behind-the-scenes tours of the famed Johnson Space Center and a huge display of space flight hardware. Space Center Houston is located at 1601 NASA Road 1, off Interstate 45 South, in the Clear Lake area. Admission is $17.95 for adults, with discounts for seniors and children. Parking is $4.00.
