Sam Houston Electric Cooperative’s new metering system was successfully implemented in 2015. The new meters work similarly to the previous meters on members’ homes and businesses. For many years, meters transmitted readings to a computer in a vehicle as it drove by each month. The new meters instead send those readings directly to the Cooperative via encrypted radio communication.
Your meter measures how much electricity you use in kilowatt-hours during a given period of time and is the basis for how your electric bill is calculated each month. Your electric bill contains a 13-month graph of electricity consumption, as well as a record of electricity used during the same month of the previous year.
With the new metering system, members have access to detailed data about their energy use in real-time. This helps you identify ways to use less electricity and reduce your monthly bills.
Accessing this information via your online account is easy. Here’s how:
- If you’ve already registered for your mySamHouston account, click here.
- If you do not have online access to your account, click here to register.
With your mySamHouston credentials, log in to your account. From there, click on “myPowerUsage” from the left-side navigation.
On this screen, you’ll see a listing of all your Sam Houston EC accounts and meters. Click “Usage” next to your desired listed meter and you’ll see electricity usage data presented in chart and table form.
Here’s what you’ll see:
- kWh (kilowatts consumed)
- Daily high, low and average temperatures
The data can be broken down by month, week, day or billing cycle. You’ll also notice an actual cost calculated for each day.
Here’s what to look for:
- Are there unexpected patterns in your usage or daily costs?
- Were your daily activities different on those days? (i.e. family stayed home, extra guests, laundry day)
- Was the temperature higher or lower on those days, causing the a/c or heat to run extra?
You can export your data or view your billing history. While you’re logged in, you can sign up for email or text message alerts. Register your cell phone, landline or email address with us, and we’ll make sure you stay in the loop. Set up your own alert preferences, and we’ll let you know when your bill is due, a payment is received or even when you’re close to your desired monthly electricity usage.
With your new myPowerUsage meter, you also have the option to sign up for myPrePay. There’s no difference in the service you’ll receive—just in HOW and WHEN you pay for it. When you sign up, you pay as often and as much as you’d like. Click here to learn more.
