When it comes to reliably serving more than 52,000 members, weather is the dominant factor.

With the help of a full-time weather team, Sam Houston Electric Cooperative can now make even more precise and informed decisions when facing inclement weather.

The Cooperative has contracted with ImpactWeather for a custom weather service, including monitoring and reporting. The company works with hundreds of businesses around the globe, providing meteorological data to make the best decisions possible when faced with weather-related challenges.

ImpactWeather is staffed by a group of meteorologists 24/7 and works with clients to understand their unique needs. For Sam Houston EC, ImpactWeather monitors and reports any storm systems that would likely cause power outages.

“The ImpactWeather service will help operations make more accurate decisions on resource planning,” said David Babcock, Sam Houston Electric Cooperative chief operations officer. “We’ll be able to make better predictions on how many crews to assign and where to place them.”

The ImpactWeather system has been utilized for a few weeks now, already proving beneficial after recent weather-related outages. In the coming weeks, additional services will be developed to expand Sam Houston EC’s access to ImpactWeather’s information.
