The members of Sam Houston Electric Cooperative nominate and elect 11 fellow members who make up our Board of Directors. These Directors guide the Cooperative and represent our member-owners.
To ensure equal representation for each and every one of our members, the Sam Houston EC service area is divided into 5 districts. Each Director is accountable to the members. After all, they are Sam Houston EC members themselves, and each Director on our 11-member Board also lives in the district he or she is elected to represent. Directors serve staggered terms of 5 years, as set forth in our bylaws.
An elections committee, made up of appointed Sam Houston EC members, must meet to review all candidates and their petitions for election.
All voting is conducted by mail-in ballot, and all directors are elected “at large.” A member’s right to vote allows him/her to have a voice in the leadership of the Cooperative. Each member, whether residential or corporate, has 1 vote.
The Board of Directors meets monthly at the Sam Houston Electric Cooperative offices in Livingston, or as otherwise determined by the Board. Additional special meetings are held as deemed necessary. Directors do not receive salary but are allowed a per diem to cover expenses for meetings attended.
Meet the Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is made up of Co-op members who are committed to serving the best interests of their fellow members. The Board must plan continually, for the short term and long term. They set strategy and goals, and they establish controls to evaluate progress toward achieving those goals and objectives. They also establish policies and procedures to provide necessary resources, including cost-effective wholesale power. For more information about the Board of Directors and Co-op governance, please see Bylaws.
