MEMBER BENEFITS AND SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS
As a not-for-profit, if the Cooperative’s revenue exceeds costs, the surplus is assigned to each member as capital credits, and used to build and improve our power distribution system. When the financial condition allows, these credits are retired and distributed to the membership.
Our generation and transmission provider, East Texas Electric Cooperative, operates the same way. In 2017 ETEC returned $2 million in capital credits to Sam Houston EC, which we sent directly to our members on their August bills. The capital credits were distributed from credits allocated in 1996-1998. Members who joined after this time will receive their capital credits in the future. Sam Houston Electric Cooperative has paid more than $41 million in capital credits to members over the years. Capital credits are another reason it’s great to be a member-owner of a not-for- profit electric cooperative!
We’re consistently among the best in the industry. Sam Houston Electric Cooperative continues to garner some of the best scores in the industry from the American Customer Satisfaction Index. The Cooperative finished 2017 with an average ACSI score of 87. The national average for electric cooperatives is 76. We couldn’t do it without the hard work and dedication of our employees.
