Power Pole Retired After 75 Years of Service

Many important things happened in 1939. The first nuclear fission experiment in the United States was conducted at Columbia University. Literary classic “The Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck was published, and The Wizard of Oz premiered in movie theaters.

During this time, in north Polk County, a power pole was set. This pole remained there for 75 years. Through wind, rain and several hurricanes, it stood tall as a reliable part of Sam Houston EC’s electrical system.

This is quite an achievement for a pressure-treated piece of wood. The Cooperative’s dedication to proper maintenance of our system helped extend the life of this pole.

In late 2014, this pole, located near Lewis Childress Road in north Polk County, was retired and brought back to the Livingston office. This week, the pole has found a new home.

As part of several updates to make our lobby more comfortable for our members, this pole is now featured in the vestibule. Next time you visit our office, be sure to take a moment to see this piece of your Cooperative's history.
