Sam Houston Electric Cooperative, Inc. will award an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for 2 high school students for the Government-In-Action Youth Tour. Contest winners will join other students from Electric Cooperatives across the nation. This will be an unforgettable look inside U.S. History and Government.
While in Washington D.C., students have a chance to:
- Visit historical sites, such as Capitol Hill, Arlington National Cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial, Mount Vernon, the Washington National Cathedral, the U.S. Supreme Court, and more.
- Meet members of Texas’ congressional delegation.
- Learn the cooperative business model.
- Create lifelong friendships with students from across the country.

2027 Youth Tour
The 2027 Youth Tour will be held June 15 to 23, 2027. Applications are being accepted through midnight on Friday, January 29, 2027.
Applicant Criteria
Eligible applicants must be:
- A high school sophomore or junior, or equivalent if homeschooled or a non-traditional student.
- A dependent of a Sam Houston EC member with permanent resident status in the Co-op’s service area.
- 16 years old with a government or state-issued driver license, ID, or passport by June 15, 2027.
- Able to participate in the Youth Tour trip to Washington, D.C. on June 15 through 23, 2027.
- Able to ride in a bus for several hours in a single day, and fly in an airplane
Immediate family members of Cooperative employees or directors are ineligible.
How to Apply
Submit a completed application form, including 2 short essays, a list of extracurricular activities, a high-resolution digital photo, and a letter of recommendation.
