Sam Houston Electric Cooperative is warning its consumer-members about an increase in scam phone calls from criminals claiming to represent the Co-op.
“These scammers have been contacting consumer-members and threatening to disconnect their electric service,” Chief Communications Officer Rachel Hawkins said. “If you are unsure you are speaking with a Co-op employee, hang up and call us immediately at 800-458-0381.”
These criminals often use threatening language to frighten consumers into paying using a prepaid card, credit card or bank account information.
Sam Houston EC members who have received a phone call from an unauthorized source may call their local law enforcement agency or the Federal Trade Commission at (877) FTC-HELP or https://reportfraud.ftc.gov.
