Stay Safe After Storms

Sam Houston EC line technicians, contractors, and tree crews are hard at work to finish restoring power after Hurricane Beryl. Be on the lookout later today for an update on their continued efforts. While you are still assessing and repairing damage in the wake of the storm, please do so safely.

Storms and hurricanes can leave more than damage in their wake— they can leave hidden dangers as well. Sam Houston EC advises everyone to be mindful of these electrical hazards that storms can leave behind.

Stay away from downed power lines and be alert to the possibility that tree limbs or debris may hide an electrical hazard. Treat all downed or hanging power lines as if they are energized and dangerous. Lines do not have to be arcing or sparking to be live. Warn others to stay away and contact the Co-op immediately at (888) 444-1207.

Be alert to any electrical equipment that could be energized and in contact with water. Never touch electrical appliances, cords, or wires while you are wet or standing in water. Never turn off your breaker box if you must stand in water to do so.

If you are cleaning up, do not use electric yard tools if it is raining, the ground is wet, or you are standing in water. Keep all electric tools and equipment at least ten feet away from wet surfaces.

Do not use water-damaged electronics or appliances until a professional has verified that they are safe.

If you are driving and come upon a downed power line, stay in your vehicle, warn others to stay away, and contact emergency personnel or the Co-op. Never drive over a downed line. A downed line causes other things around it to become potentially hazardous.

Always make sure to check your service entrance after a storm. Depending on your home's electric service, this can include the lines going into your home, the meter pole, and the lines leading to it. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, contact an electrician for a full inspection and service. Some service entrances (also called meter loops) may need to be repaired before a home can safely receive electric service.
