  2020: A Season of Giving

Sam Houston Electric Cooperative employees stepped up again this year for the Empty Stocking Fund which supports a local family during the Christmas season with gifts and food.

Co-op employees raised $2,020 this year and every dollar was needed as this year’s family has eight children, according to Huda Hill, new construction service representative. It is the biggest family the co-op has ever adopted.

Hill and Stephanie Spore, member services representative, collected donations and shopped for the family.

“They each got clothes, jackets, shoes, necessity items, nerf guns, art supplies, Legos, books to read, diaries, bracelet making kit, baby dolls, a soccer ball, skateboard, coloring book/crayons and bicycles,” Hill said. “The family also got an HEB gift card for groceries.”

Hill is extremely proud of her fellow Sam Houston EC employees for continuing to make a difference in the communities the Co-op serves.

“They are all wonderful, generous, thoughtful coworkers and I say to each and every person thank you, thank you, thank you! You are all amazing and we have been able to bless a family whose children are going to have an awesome Christmas!”

Despite many employees working from home or only coming in to get supplies and materials, Spore noted collecting money was not difficult this year. She estimates more than 50 employees made the effort to donate.

“Most of my co-workers know that I am passionate about this particular program so when asking for donations and providing different ways for them to donate made it quite easy,” Spore said. “I myself love being able to oversee a program where it allows me to give back, and I am so grateful to be able to work with such a group of co-workers that without hesitation will give when asked.”

Bikes for Tikes

The Co-op also donated several bicycles to the town for Goodrich as part of the Goodrich Christmas Market and Lighted Parade. The bikes are handed out to children during the parade.

FAITH Military Support Group

Sam Houston EC donated 300 hand sanitizer bottles to the FAITH Military Support Group. The hand sanitizers will be especially helpful this year as the world continues to experience a pandemic.
