In a sense, it’s been another year of recovery for Sam Houston Electric Cooperative—but this time, it’s been a race to outrun mother nature. Record-breaking drought in recent years has taken a significant toll on trees, both pine and hardwood, across the Co-op’s 10-county service territory.
Since October 2011, Sam Houston EC has been operating one of the most thorough and proactive right-of-way maintenance programs in all of Texas. To date, the Co-op has taken down more than 110,000 dead and danger trees along its more than 6,000 miles of electric distribution lines.
“Our proactive measures have helped dramatically reduce the risk of fires and outages that could be potentially caused by dead trees,” said Sam Houston EC CEO Kyle J. Kuntz. “Keeping our rights-of-way clear will help ensure power reliability for our members.”
