Sam Houston Electric Cooperative Charitable Foundation recently awarded several grants to local non-profit organizations.

“The Foundation is supported by the Operation Round Up program, where Co-op members can ‘round up’ their bill to the next whole dollar,” said Rachel Frey, communications specialist. “The amount is typically less than 50 cents per month, or just $6 per year.”

Grants were recently distributed to Friends of Lake Livingston, which works to restore aquatic habitat throughout Lake Livingston.

Reading Encourages Advanced Development (READ) also received a grant to enroll more children in their program, which is the local chapter of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. They distribute free books monthly to children under the age of 5.

Hardin Helping Hands provides clothing and other items to Hardin ISD school children in need of assistance. They received a $500 donation.

“The Sam Houston EC Charitable Foundation Board of Directors are proud to support these organizations who work to improve the quality of life in East Texas,” Frey said.

The Cooperative recently presented three organizations with additional grants from CoBank, one of the Cooperative’s banking partners.

“CoBank provided matching grants to READ and Friends of Lake Livingston,” Frey said. “They also provided a matching grant to Coldspring Area Public Library, who received a grant from the Charitable Foundation earlier this year.”

Members can join Operation Round Up and contribute to the Sam Houston EC Charitable Foundation by calling the Cooperative at 800-458-0381.

Non-profit organizations can apply for grants by visiting SamHouston.net. Organizations must be designated a 501(c)3 non-profit organization by the Internal Revenue Service to qualify for a grant.
