Sam Houston Electric Cooperative’s 2024 scholarship application will not require a copy of the student’s official Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Student Aid Report, due to issues causing delays in the FAFSA process.

“Sam Houston EC is proud to provide $80,000 in scholarships each year to East Texans,” Chief Communications Officer Rachel Hawkins said. “Unfortunately, families are having difficulty with receiving this year’s FAFSA Student Aid Report. In order for the Co-op to process applications and award scholarships in a timely manner, students can omit the FAFSA report from the scholarship application for this year only.”

Each year Sam Houston Electric Cooperative sponsors a scholarship program for high school seniors whose parents or legal guardians are active Sam Houston EC members. The money that funds the scholarship program comes from unclaimed Cooperative capital credits that are returned by the State of Texas each year and earmarked for scholarships.

Scholarships are awarded to students who attend public, private, parochial or home school. Interested students can contact any of the Co-op’s branch offices by phone or in person to obtain an information package and application, or it can be downloaded here.

Completed applications and recommendations must be received at a Sam Houston EC office by Friday, Feb. 2. Since its inception in 1992, the scholarship program has benefited more than 650 local students to the tune of $1 million.

The deadline for the Government-in-Action Youth Tour is also rapidly approaching for current sophomore or junior high school students. Applicants must be a dependent of a Sam Houston EC member with permanent resident status in the Co-op’s service area.
