Employee Growth

Creating a Culture of Safety

Sam Houston Electric Cooperative has teamed up with Caterpillar Safety Services for training and employee-led programs aimed at creating a culture of safety. At Sam Houston EC, we believe one of our most important roles is to educate our members, neighbors, and especially our employees, about what to do to stay safe around electricity. Our goal is to create a culture focused on safety. Our employees look out for one another because at the end of the day, we want everyone to get home safely.

“Zero incidents is the only acceptable goal in safety,” said David Crouch, Caterpillar Safety instructor. “Employees’ safety takes precedence over production.”

Safety is integrated into our Cooperative policies, procedures and measurements. Our efforts to create a true culture of safety lie in total ownership on the part of our employees.

With Caterpillar’s lead, a series of Continuous Improvement Teams were created to help strengthen specific functions of the Cooperative. CI Team 1 chose to address employee safety meetings, resolving to create more employee involvement, accountability and visible solutions to issues.

CI Team 2 focused on positive performance recognition at Sam Houston EC. The new positive performance recognition process focuses on quality communication and the positive reinforcement of safe and correct work practices. It is measured using a card system that provides accountability.

Continuous Improvement

“We have an ongoing journey with Caterpillar Safety Services,” said Charlie Palmer, Sam Houston EC manager of operations. “It’s about employees getting together and saying ‘This is what we think needs to be done.’”
